Jean Max

Maxime Barrot, also known as Jean Max, is an artisan winemaker based in Charnay, in the heart of the Pierres Dorées Beaujolais region. A native of this wine region, Maxime Barrot has enriched his experience by working alongside prestigious winemakers around the world. In Chile, he worked with Roberto Henriquez, in the Mâconnais with the Bret Brothers, and in Beaujolais with Yvon and Jules Métras. These diverse experiences have enabled him to acquire solid expertise in viticulture and enology. In 2019, Maxime launched a micro-négoce to showcase the terroirs of southern Beaujolais. He cultivates 3 hectares of vines naturally, divided between 1 hectare of Chardonnay and 2 hectares of Gamay. His approach focuses on soil health, deep-rooted vines and positive competition from weeds. Harvesting is carried out by hand, allowing the best grapes to be selected. Maxime has also established lasting partnerships with local organic winemakers such as Simon Perrot and Philippe and Aurélie Thomas. Together, they share a common vision of environmentally-friendly viticulture. Maxime Barrot's wines are made using traditional methods, including carbonic maceration, spontaneous fermentation and ageing in oak barrels. This approach produces wines that are authentic and expressive of the terroir. Maxime's cuvées include “L'Ext'hase”, “Le rouge à lièvre”, “Dame Jeanne” and “Jean veut Amphore”. Each of these cuvées is renowned for its finesse and ability to reflect the unique character of the terroir. Maxime Barrot's reputation was quickly established thanks to his passion for beautiful terroirs and his respectful approach to viticulture. By combining tradition and innovation, he strives to produce high-quality wines that appeal to wine lovers and critics alike.
