Domaine Arretxea was created in the 1990s by Thérèse and Michel Riouspeyrous in the heart of the magnificent Basque vineyard of Irouleguy. Located on the southern slopes of the Western Pyrenees, the estate benefits from an altitude of between 200m and 400m all around Saint Etienne de Baïgorry and Saint Jean Pied de Port. The estate, since the installation with them of their two sons Iban and Teo, extends over 12 ha: 4.5 ha of white grapes (Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng and Petit Courbu) and 7.5 ha of red (Tannat in majority, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon). The vineyard is located in a majestic landscape on steep hillsides and terraces, surrounded by mountains, Basque valleys and benefiting from the Foehn effect of the southerly winds in the late season. Certified in organic farming since 1998 and in biodynamics, the family works without chemical fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides and seeks to have a living biodiversity by working on the development of a rich and varied ecosystem. They also work to safeguard their plant heritage, one of their hobby horses. All the harvests are done manually in crates and with particular attention to the sorting of the grapes in order to pick the healthiest grapes possible. In the cellar, fermentations are launched from vat feet in indigenous yeasts, the estate carries out a real work of selection of indigenous yeasts on their own terroir in order to maintain a unity of style. An aging on lees with light stirring is then carried out in order to bring a certain roundness to grape varieties which can sometimes seem hard and sometimes austere. No wine is subsequently fined, but filtered lightly according to the profile of the vintage.

Who are we ?

Created in 2010, Vinograf was taken over in July 2024 by Clara & Baptiste. With their experience with Marée Haute, they work to perpetuate Vinograf's strong commitments: a careful selection of established or novice artisan winemakers, all driven by the concern for excellence in their practices, in the magnification of terroirs and the search for authenticity of taste.

Several specifications correspond to these names. If we very often hear about sulphites, rightly accused of giving a headache, many other products can be used in the composition of so-called conventional wines.
Here is an overview of the different organic, biodynamic and natural specifications:
The organic specifications (AB label) prohibit any use of synthetic chemicals in the vineyards and in the winery. However, it allows some oenological crutches during winemaking. Sulfites, for example, are tolerated up to 100 mg/L for red wines and 150 mg/L for whites.

In biodynamics (Demeter or Biodyvin label), the winemaker not only works without synthetic chemicals, but also takes into account the lunar calendar for all the operations he carries out. He will also use biodynamic preparations (fermented horn dung, silica, plant herbal tea, etc.) to strengthen the vines. Overall, the winegrower seeks to include the cultivation of the vine in a global environment. Sulphites can go up to 70 mg/L for reds and 90 mg/L for whites.

In natural wine (Vin Method Nature label), the specifications specify the use of organic grapes, fermenting naturally using native yeasts (as in biodynamics). Natural wines see no input during all vinification and aging. Only minimum doses of SO2 are permitted (30 mg/L maximum), and must be mentioned by the winemaker. No brutal filtration or wine alteration techniques are permitted. We also find the name SAINS Wines which aims to completely prohibit the use of sulphites.

We strive to offer you wines from artisan wines, from estates on a human scale and often family-owned. And that's why we take the time to travel across France from vineyard to vineyard in search of these natural wines that thrill us.
We are particularly keen to introduce you to the new winegrowers of tomorrow who work tirelessly to offer us magnificent wines.
We want to highlight them, and allow them to have greater, clearer visibility and wish to accompany them to you!
